Analyze the importance of Ashokan inscriptions for reconstructing Mauryan history.

IAS MENTORSHIP 2 min read

Ashokan inscriptions are among the most important sources for understanding the Mauryan period. Deciphered by James Prinsep in 1837, the inscriptions on rocks, pillars and caves provide valuable evidence about Ashoka’s rule, administration, policies and Dhamma.

Importance in Reconstructing Mauryan History

  • Extent of the Empire: The inscriptions found from Kandahar in the northwest to Karnataka in the south help us understand the broad geographical spread of Mauryan authority.
  • Administration: References to officials such as Rajjukas, Yuktas and Dhamma Mahamattas give an idea of how the Mauryan administration functioned.
  • Dhamma and Governance: The edicts explain Ashoka’s idea of Dhamma, which emphasised moral conduct, tolerance and social harmony. Rock Edict XII, for example, stresses respect for different religious traditions.
  • Welfare Orientation: Ashoka’s statement that “All men are my children”( Separate Kalinga Rock Edict I) reflects his concern for the welfare of his subjects. References to wells, trees, medical facilities and roads also provide insights into his approach to governance.
  • Foreign Relations: Major Rock Edict XIII mentions contacts with Hellenistic rulers and southern kingdoms such as the Cholas and Pandyas, offering evidence of Mauryan diplomatic outreach.
  • Royal Ideology: Pillar Edict VII portrays the king as a responsible ruler concerned with the moral and material welfare of his subjects.
  • Society and Culture: The use of Prakrit, Brahmi, Kharosthi, Greek and Aramaic reflects the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Mauryan world.
  • Corroborating Other Sources: As contemporary records, the inscriptions help historians compare and verify information found in Buddhist and Jain traditions, literary sources and archaeological evidence.

Conclusion

Ashokan inscriptions provide a valuable first-hand window into Mauryan administration, geography, governance, diplomacy and social concerns. However, they mainly present the ruler’s perspective. Therefore, a fuller picture of Mauryan history emerges when they are studied alongside literary and archaeological sources.
