If current trends persist, the country’s population will fall from 52 million today to just 22 million by the year 2100 — a reduction of approximately 42% in under eight decades. This is not a distant statistical abstraction: it is a trajectory already locked in by a fertility rate (0.75) so far below the replacement threshold (2.1) that no policy response short of a historic reversal can fully prevent significant population loss.
Key Factors Behind the Demographic Decline
Any country’s population trajectory depends primarily on three variables: Fertility Rate, Life Expectancy, and Net Migration. South Korea’s position on each:
Historic collapse in fertility rate: South Korea’s average fertility rate was 6 children per woman in the 1960s. It has since fallen to just 0.75 — less than one-third of the 2.1 replacement level required to maintain a stable population without immigration.

Way Forward: The Mixed Approach
The most policy-viable path for South Korea combines elements of all three scenarios:
Raise and sustain fertility at 2.3: Through broad socio-economic reforms — expanded childcare allowances, genuine work-life balance legislation, and structural gender equality — stabilising fertility at 2.3 over the coming decades is the most targeted solution. Such reversals are rare but not without precedent in countries that committed sustained investment.
Liberalise immigration policy: Making visa and citizenship pathways accessible to skilled foreign professionals can address the immediate working-age population gap, even as longer-term fertility improvements work through the system.
Lessons for India
Demographic dividend is time-limited: South Korea’s crisis illustrates that if the demographic window is not actively exploited for productive economic transformation, a country can find itself ‘ageing before becoming rich’ — carrying an elderly dependent population before it has built the wealth to support it.
Early warning signals in India: India’s overall population is still growing, but several southern states — notably Kerala and Tamil Nadu — have fertility rates already below the 2.1 replacement level. These states are several decades ahead of the national trend and serve as an early indicator of what India’s demographic transition may look like in the 2040s and 2050s.
