Why in News?
- Children and teenagers are using technology more than ever before because many of their daily activities (education, recreation, social interactions) have moved to the internet.
- Rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) has caused concern regarding how it affects cognitive development, attention, memory, self-control and creative thinking.
Key Issues and Concerns
1. A Brain Under Construction
- Critical period for development: The brain systems responsible for how you think, feel, and behave are still developing throughout your childhood and teenage years.
- Prefrontal Cortex: The prefrontal cortex has an important role in supporting attention, working memory, planning, making decisions, and controlling impulses. This area of the brain is still maturing through early adulthood.
- Impact of Digital Exposure: Constant access to digital devices may alter how the brain develops and strengthens its neural connections; while some areas will become more developed, others may remain under-developed.
- Emerging Research: High levels of screen time may alter the way that the brain is structured and how it connects. These associations do not demonstrate cause-and-effect.
2. Social Media and Attention
- Attention-Seeking Design: Short Videos, Autoplay, Infinite Scrolling, Algorithmic Recommendations and Social Feedback are designed to attract and maintain attention.
- Variable Reward Systems: Likes, shares, and comments give people rapid but erratic feedback, which causes them to check the site frequently and switch focus quickly.
- Difficulty with Concentration: These patterns can cause you to find it difficult to focus on one activity.
- Impact on Everyday Experiences: The impact on daily life is that face-to-face interactions, skill practice and thought-reflection may seem less fulfilling than receiving instant gratification via digital media.
3. AI and Cognitive Offloading
- Meaning: Cognitive offloading means using tools to lower your mental work and is not automatically bad.
- AI is a Replacement for Thinking: Students may use AI to come up with ideas, structure their thoughts, write papers and provide summaries of what they have read.
- Impact on Learning: When AI takes over independent thinking, there is a risk that the mental exertion needed to acquire knowledge and skills will be compromised.
- Decreased Critical Thinking Skills: Dealing with tough questions, using appropriate language, committing errors and revising your argument are all essential components of learning.
- Need for independent thinking: Excessive use of AI can lead to poor critical thinking skills, lack of ability to make informed decisions based on evidence and lack of perseverance in solving problems that require an answer which may not be readily available.
4. Importance of Boredom and Reflection
- Creativity/Imagination : When we are bored, it gives us time to imagine things, reflect upon our lives, create new ideas, and develop a rich inner world.
- Reduced Unstructured Time: Because young people now spend all their “free time” being stimulated by something, they are able to spend less of it thinking, wondering, dreaming about what could happen, or reflecting on their experiences.
5. Neuroplasticity and Digital Adaptation
- Meaning: Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change in response to new experiences, learning and environments throughout your lifetime.
- Positive Adaptation: Many youth demonstrate a high ability to filter out information, use complicated digital environments and transition from one source of information to another.
- Need to balance assessment: Considering what we gain vs. lose with today’s technology-based environment.
6. Corporate Accountability
- Incentives for Businesses: Companies that create digital products and services have significant economic motivation to attract and retain the interest of young consumers.
- Insufficient Data: There is little known about the long-term impact of extended digital exposure to developing brains and minds.
- Need for Greater Scrutiny: Scrutiny is required of the digital platforms that are used primarily by youth, and they should be held accountable.
Way Forward
- Parental Guidance: Parents need to provide their children with some “device-free” periods during the day, as well as a safe place to do school work, good sleeping habits and free time.
- Encourage Productive Struggle: Schools need to allow students to think for themselves, write for themselves, reason through problems, solve problems on their own and work through uncertainty.
- Responsible Use of AI: Digital tools should help support analysis, revision and feedback but not replace critical thinking.
- Reform assessment methods: A greater focus should be placed on speaking tests, written work with supervision, and practical application of knowledge to solve problems.
- Platform Accountability: Policymakers should force platforms to give more proof on how they affect child and teen’s cognitive and emotional development with their products.
- Independent Research: Independent research is needed by governments to develop and refine policy and regulatory frameworks based on the evolution of technology.
- Balanced Digital Engagement: The goal is not to eliminate screens, but to make sure they aren’t occupying all your time.
Conclusion
India’s youth are growing up in an environment that was unimaginable until quite recently. We cannot simply ignore or reject digital technology; our responsibility is to help children use it capably, thoughtfully and responsibly. We should embrace technological progress while protecting the experiences through which children and adolescents learn to think, imagine, reflect and grow.
