Teghaza 001

IAS MENTORSHIP 3 min read

Why in News?

  • A NASA-funded study published in October 2026 in the journal Science revealed that Teghaza 001, a Martian meteorite discovered in Mali’s Sahara Desert, is more than 4.1 billion years old.
  • It is considered one of the oldest known pieces of Mars found on Earth.

About Teghaza 001

  • Nature: Rose-coloured Martian meteorite.
  • Discovery: Found in 2022 in the Sahara Desert, Mali, near the Teghaza salt plain.
  • Name: Named after the Teghaza salt plain in Mali.
  • Weight: Approximately 800 grams.
  • Age: More than 4.1 billion years.
  • Significance: One of the three most ancient Martian meteorite samples discovered on Earth.
  • Origin: Formed from cooling magma in the ancient Martian crust.

Major Scientific Findings

  • Evidence of Ancient Water: Chemical markers indicate that the rock interacted with liquid water during its formation and evolution.
  • Subsurface Water: Water interacted with rocks beneath the Martian surface around 4.1 billion years ago.
  • Ancient Environment: Provides evidence that early Mars was warmer and wetter than it is today.
  • Potential Habitability: Suggests that ancient Mars may have had environmental conditions suitable for life, but does not prove that life existed.
  • Zircon Crystals: Zircon minerals helped scientists determine the meteorite’s age through radiometric dating.
  • Scientific Importance: Provides a rare insight into the formation and evolution of the ancient Martian crust.

Other Ancient Martian Meteorites

  • ALH84001: One of the oldest known Martian meteorites found on Earth.
  • Black Beauty: Another Martian meteorite, formed approximately 2.1 billion years ago.
  • Teghaza 001: Along with ALH84001 and Black Beauty, it is among the three most ancient Martian meteorite samples identified on Earth.

Basic Concepts: Meteoroid, Meteor and Meteorite

  • Meteoroid: A piece of solid material of different sizes orbiting the Sun.
  • Meteor: When a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and burns up, it produces a bright streak of light called a meteor.
  • Meteorite: When a meteoroid survives its journey through the atmosphere and reaches the ground, it is called a meteorite.
