UPSC essay topics of previous years show one clear trend: the paper now asks short, quote-like statements, mostly philosophical, and expects you to anchor them in real Indian and global issues. Below are verified topics from 2021 to 2025, followed by the patterns they reveal and a method to practise with them.
Previous-year questions are the best practice material for the 250-mark essay. In our Essay Foundation programme, students work through a curated list of essay-tested topics from the last 15 years of UPSC CSE. For the full overview of the paper, see the UPSC essay paper guide.

Patterns in UPSC Essay PYQs
Reading five years together shows five patterns.
| Pattern | Evidence from PYQs | What it means for you |
| Quote-style statements dominate | Almost every topic since 2021 is a one-line aphorism | Practise decoding, not memorising content |
| Section A leans abstract | Truth, thought, happiness, character, justice | Master the Philosophical-Anchor structure |
| Section B often hides an issue | Social media and FOMO, forests, decision-making | Use a Hybrid structure: open abstract, argue concrete |
| Themes recur in new words | Forests in 2022 and 2024; time and experience in 2025 | Build theme-wise idea banks, not topic-wise essays |
| Science and knowledge return | Research (2021), doubter (2024), thought (2025) | Keep examples ready on science, method and innovation |
Recurring themes worth preparing
- Ethics and character — power, adversity, justice, charity, contentment.
- Knowledge and thinking — research, doubt, ideas, mind, intuition and logic.
- Environment — forests, sustainability, civilisation and decline.
- Time, change and experience — the river, the roof, the journey, bitter lessons.
- Technology and society — self-discovery outsourced, social media and youth.
- Women and society — “Hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”.
If you have an idea bank and 4–5 examples for each of these six themes, you can handle most new topics, because UPSC tends to reword old themes rather than invent new ones.
How to Use PYQs for Practice
Do not try to write all 40 topics as full essays. That burns time and gives little feedback. Use a three-level method instead.
Level 1: Decode every topic (10 minutes each)
Write the topic in your own words, list the keywords, and state the hidden question. For “Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone”, the hidden question is: when is patience or restraint a better response than action, in personal life, policy, diplomacy and conflict?
Level 2: Outline 20 topics (25 minutes each)
Brainstorm dimensions (individual, society, polity, economy, environment, international, ethics), choose 6–8 points, assign an example to each, and plan the introduction and conclusion. Our brainstorming and outline guide has a template.
Level 3: Write 8–10 full essays under time
Pick a mix of abstract and issue-based topics. Write in 90 minutes, then get feedback. A self-evaluated essay rarely reveals structural problems. This is where a mentor’s margin remarks help most.

A Worked Example: Decoding a 2024 Topic
Topic: “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but to test the character, give him power.”
- Plain meaning: Hardship is a common test; power is the real test, because it removes external checks.
- Dimensions: personal (a newly promoted officer), political (constitutional limits on power), administrative (discretion and corruption), corporate (governance failures), historical (leaders who used or misused power), ethical (integrity, accountability).
- Counter-view: adversity also shapes character; some people fail under hardship.
- Resolution: institutions exist because individual character is not enough; the best leaders accept checks on their own power.
This is a natural Philosophical-Anchor essay. Notice how much of the content comes from your GS II and Ethics preparation. For more abstract topics, see how to write a philosophical essay for UPSC.
