Why in News?
- In October 2026, critical security vulnerabilities in PHP, a programming language widely used to build websites, triggered emergency cybersecurity measures worldwide.
- Governments, banks and businesses temporarily took some websites and online services offline to prevent potential cyberattacks while security patches were applied.
- Cybersecurity firm Cloudflare reported a sharp rise in attempted exploitation, reaching millions of attempts.
Prelims Pointers
1. PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor)
- An open-source, general-purpose scripting language widely used for web development.
- Primarily executes on the server side to generate dynamic web pages.
- Used by content management systems, e-commerce platforms and government websites.
- WordPress is a prominent example of software built using PHP.
2. Software Vulnerability
- A weakness or flaw in software that an attacker may exploit to compromise a system.
- Vulnerabilities can result in unauthorised access, data theft, service disruption or system takeover.
- A security patch is an update released to fix a vulnerability.
3. Remote Code Execution (RCE)
- A cyberattack in which an attacker can execute commands or code on a remote computer.
- If exploited successfully, it may enable an attacker to access data, alter website content or gain control of a server.
- The reported PHP flaws were rated critical because of the potential for unauthenticated remote code execution.
