A good score in UPSC essay is one that puts you clearly ahead of the pack rather than level with it. Among serious candidates, essay marks in the low 100s are common, while scores of 140 and above give a real advantage in a 250-mark paper. Treat roughly 110 as a baseline many aspirants hit, and 140+ as the zone where the essay starts winning you rank.
That is also the stated aim of our Essay Foundation programme: to take aspirants from a ~110-mark essay to 140+. For the full picture of the paper, read the UPSC essay paper guide.
How UPSC Essay Marks Work
| Feature | Detail |
| Paper | Essay (Paper I), CSE Mains |
| Maximum marks | 250 |
| Essays | Two, 125 marks each, one from each section |
| Counts towards merit | Yes, fully, like each GS paper |
| Marks disclosed | Candidates can see their paper-wise marks after the final result |
The essay is not a qualifying paper. Every mark counts in your Mains total, and therefore in your final rank and service allocation.
What Is a Good Score in UPSC Essay? Score Bands Explained
Exact cut-offs for the essay alone are not published, and marks vary year to year with topics and evaluation. Mentors therefore talk in broad bands. Use these as a reading guide, not official figures:
| Score band (out of 250) | What it usually signals |
| Below 100 | Structural problems, topic drift, or one weak essay dragging the total down |
| 100–120 | Competent but generic; the baseline many serious aspirants reach |
| 120–140 | Above average; clear structure and some strong examples |
| 140+ | A real advantage; both essays balanced, specific and well argued |
The key point: the same candidate can swing 20–30 marks between attempts on the essay alone. That swing is often larger than the gap between two GS scores.
Why Essay Marks Decide Ranks
In GS papers, well-prepared candidates often land within a narrow range of one another. The essay is different: there is no syllabus ceiling, and evaluation rewards thinking and expression, which differ widely between candidates. That makes it one of the biggest mark differentiators in Mains.
A practical way to see it: improving your essay by 30 marks has the same effect on your total as improving one GS paper by 30 marks, which for most candidates is much harder at an advanced stage.
What Pulls Essay Marks Down
- Topic drift. Writing around the topic instead of on it.
- GS-answer style. Headings, bullet points and fact lists instead of prose argument.
- Unequal essays. A strong first essay and a rushed second one.
- Vague examples. “Many initiatives” rather than a named scheme or case.
- One-sided arguments. No counter-view, no balance.
- Weak conclusion. Repeating the introduction or ending on a quote alone.
Our detailed list of UPSC essay common mistakes shows how to fix each.
What Lifts UPSC Essay Marks
- Precise interpretation of the topic in the introduction
- Four to six real dimensions in the body, not a GS checklist
- Specific value-additions: articles, judgements, schemes, stories, data you are sure of
- A fair counter-view with a reasoned reply
- A doable way forward and a clear closing line
- Equal depth across both essays, supported by firm time management

How to Estimate Your Own Score Before Mains
Self-scoring is unreliable, but you can get closer with a rubric. Rate each essay on five areas out of 5:
| Area | What to check |
| Interpretation | Did you answer the exact question? |
| Structure | Do paragraphs flow logically? |
| Depth | Are dimensions explained, not listed? |
| Evidence | Are examples specific and accurate? |
| Conclusion | Is there a balanced way forward? |
A total of 20+ out of 25 on both essays usually indicates you are writing in the stronger bands. Below 15 on either essay signals work on fundamentals. The real calibration, though, comes from evaluation by someone who has read many copies.
Using Your Previous Mains Essay Marks
If you have taken Mains before:
- Note your essay score next to your GS scores. If it is your lowest relative to the maximum, the essay is your fastest lever.
- Recall the topics you chose and why. Were they safe choices that led to generic writing?
- Rewrite one of those essays now and get it evaluated. The comparison is very revealing.
A Realistic Improvement Timeline
Essay marks do not move overnight, but they move faster than most GS scores. A typical pattern with evaluated practice:
- Weeks 1–3: structure stabilises; topic drift and headings disappear.
- Weeks 4–7: examples become specific; counter-views appear naturally.
- Weeks 8–12: both essays reach similar depth within the three hours.
The aim is consistency. A good score in UPSC essay comes from two reliable essays, not one lucky one.
Section A vs Section B: Does It Affect Marks?
Both essays carry 125 marks, and neither section is easier by design. Section A and Section B topics vary in style across years, and either section can include abstract or issue-based topics. What hurts UPSC essay marks is not the section but an imbalance: one essay of 1,300 words and another of 700. Plan both before writing either, and protect equal time for each.
How Mentorship Helps You Reach a Good Score
In the Essay Foundation programme you write two essays a week — one philosophical, one contemporary, minimum 1,000 words each — and each comes back within 72 hours with margin remarks on structure, content depth, value-additions, quotes, anchor-shifting and conclusion. A 1:1 mentor call every two weeks tracks your marks across 16–20 evaluated essays per cycle.
The programme runs 8–12 weeks, online with weekly live sessions and recordings, in English or Hindi, with small capped batches and two cycles a year (June and December). Riyasat Ali Sir has mentored Essay and Ethics since 2011. Ayushi Pradhan (AIR-36, CSE-2023) and Ravi Raj (Hindi medium, AIR-20, CSE-2025) both trained in its essay mentorship.

FAQs
What is a good score in UPSC essay?
There is no official benchmark, but 140 and above out of 250 is widely seen as a strong score that gives a clear edge, while marks around 100–120 are common among serious candidates.
Is 120 a good score in UPSC essay?
It is respectable and above many candidates, but it is not usually a differentiator. Pushing towards 140 makes the essay work in your favour.
Are essay marks counted in the final merit list?
Yes. The essay is a merit paper of 250 marks, counted in your Mains total and therefore in your final rank.
Why do my essay marks vary so much between attempts?
Topics, your topic choice and the balance between the two essays all matter. A systematic structure and regular evaluated practice reduce that variation.
Can essay marks compensate for a weak GS paper?
To some extent. A strong essay adds as much to your total as a strong GS paper, so improving it is one of the most efficient ways to raise your overall score.
